If you have picked up an old coin, a plumbing offcut or an unmarked "copper" bar and wondered whether it is really copper, that question has a proper answer. Copper, brass and bronze sit close enough in colour that they get confused constantly, and the difference matters a great deal once you move from decorative objects to bullion bought by weight.

The short version: copper is an element. Brass and bronze are alloys built mostly from copper with something else added. Almost every practical difference follows from that one fact.

What each material actually is

Copper

Copper is a chemical element, symbol Cu. Bullion copper is made to a stated fineness, and .999 fine means the metal is 99.9 percent copper by weight, with the remaining 0.1 percent made up of other trace elements. Nothing is deliberately added to change its properties.

Pure copper is soft, highly conductive, and a distinctive salmon-pink to warm orange when freshly cut or polished. That pinkish cast is the single most useful visual clue you have.

Brass

Brass is copper plus zinc. The ratio varies widely by application, and that variation is exactly why brass is so hard to pin down by eye. Common yellow brasses carry enough zinc to read as clearly yellow or gold rather than pink. But high-copper brasses, sometimes sold as red brass or gilding metal, contain far more copper and can look almost identical to the real thing.

Brass is harder than pure copper, machines cleanly, and turns up in plumbing fittings, door hardware, musical instruments, cartridge cases and costume jewellery.

Bronze

Bronze is traditionally copper plus tin, usually with small additions of other elements. The modern picture is messier, because the word now covers a family of alloys including aluminium bronze, phosphor bronze and silicon bronze, some of which contain no tin at all.

Bronzes are generally harder and more wear-resistant than pure copper. They are used for bearings, bells, propellers, marine fittings and sculpture, and historically for low-denomination coinage.

How to tell them apart in the hand

No single test is conclusive on its own. Used together, these cues will get you a long way:

  • Colour, on a fresh surface. Copper leans pink and orange. Yellow brass leans distinctly yellow. Bronze usually reads as a duller, browner gold. Judge this on a clean or freshly cut edge, in daylight, and ideally against a piece you already trust. Tarnished surfaces lie.
  • Weight and density. Copper is a little denser than the common yellow brasses, while bronzes sit across a wider band depending on the alloy. The gap is real but small, so on a 1oz piece density is a supporting clue rather than a verdict. It becomes far more useful on larger objects.
  • Hardness. Pure copper is noticeably soft. It marks and dents more readily than brass or bronze, and it deforms rather than springs. Do not go testing this on bullion you intend to keep, but it explains a lot about how each metal behaves in service.
  • Sound. Strike a bronze object and it tends to ring. There is a reason bells are cast in bronze rather than copper. Pure copper is comparatively dull and dead.
  • Conductivity, via the magnet drop. None of these three metals is attracted to a magnet, so a magnet sticking to something is a sign of a steel or iron core, not of any of them. What is useful is dropping a strong neodymium magnet down a copper tube or past a thick copper plate: copper's high electrical conductivity generates eddy currents that visibly brake the magnet. Brass and bronze conduct less well and show a weaker effect. On a thin 1oz piece the effect is subtle, so this works best on tube or pipe.
  • Markings. Bullion is normally stamped with its weight and fineness. Fittings, offcuts and decorative pieces usually are not, or carry a manufacturer's part code instead.

Where people usually get caught out

The confusion rarely comes from someone mistaking a trumpet for a copper bar. It comes from a handful of specific situations.

Old coins. Many of the world's low-denomination "coppers" were struck in bronze rather than in pure copper. They are copper-rich, but they are not fine copper, and their copper content cannot be read straight off their weight.

Copper-plated items. Plating a cheaper base metal with a thin copper layer is common and entirely legitimate for hardware and craft goods. It becomes a problem only when the piece is presented as solid. A magnet is the quick screen here, because a steel core will respond to one where solid copper, brass and bronze will not.

Unmarked novelty rounds. Souvenir and art pieces are often produced in brass or a copper-coloured alloy with no fineness stated anywhere on them. If a piece does not state its purity, treat it as an object rather than as metal by weight.

Scrap terminology. Scrap yards grade material commercially, and the categories they use are about recovery value, not about a stated bullion fineness. Scrap language does not transfer usefully to bullion.

Why the distinction matters when you buy

When you buy bullion, you are buying a known quantity of a known metal at a stated purity, so the price per troy ounce is something you can actually work out. That is the whole point of the format. A 1 Troy Ounce Copper Bar .999 Fine is NZ$9.00 GST inclusive, which is NZ$9.00 per troy ounce. A Tube of 20 x 1 Troy Ounce Copper Rounds is NZ$160.00 for 20 troy ounces, or NZ$8.00 per ounce. You can compare those two figures directly because the stated purity behind them is the same.

With an unmarked brass or bronze item, none of that arithmetic works. You know the total weight and nothing else. The copper fraction could be anywhere from most of it to a modest share, and the balance is zinc, tin or something else entirely.

It is also why the fineness stamped on the copper we sell reads .999. That is three nines, or 99.9 percent copper, and it is the figure you should expect to see on the metal itself and repeated in the product description. If the two do not agree, ask before you buy.

A practical way to think about it

Copper is the metal. Brass and bronze are recipes that start with copper and go somewhere else for good engineering reasons. Neither alloy is inferior in any absolute sense, and both do jobs pure copper cannot. They simply are not interchangeable with fine copper when what you want is a stated weight of a stated metal.
