You are holding a copper round, the colour looks right, and you have no way of knowing whether it is copper all the way through. It is a fair question with a practical answer. A digital scale, a ruler, a magnet and about ten minutes will answer a good part of it, and this article is also clear about where those checks stop.
What you are actually guarding against
Copper is not gold, and that changes the shape of the problem. Much of what you pay for a small copper piece covers manufacturing, packaging, handling and delivery rather than the metal itself, so there is far less incentive to fake a copper round than a gold or silver one.
The realistic risks are duller and more common than outright forgery:
- Copper-plated base metal sold or resold as solid copper, usually a zinc, steel or aluminium core under a thin copper skin.
- Copper alloys such as brass or bronze described loosely as "copper" with no purity figure attached.
- Underweight pieces sold as "1 oz" when the ounce in question is not a troy ounce, or when the piece is simply light.
- Vague listings that never state purity or weight at all, so there is nothing specific to be wrong about.
- Novelty and art pieces made as souvenirs, then resold second hand as bullion.
Those are misdescription problems more often than elaborate counterfeiting, and misdescription is the kind of thing basic measurement catches.
Start with the scale
Weight is the most useful single check, and it is the one most people skip.
Bullion is sold in troy ounces, not the ounces on a kitchen scale. By definition one troy ounce is 31.1035 grams, while an ordinary avoirdupois ounce is 28.35 grams. So a piece advertised as "1 oz" that weighs about 28.35 grams is roughly nine percent short of the metal a troy ounce buyer expects.
Use a digital scale that reads to 0.01 g, and zero it with nothing on the pan. As a reference, one troy ounce is about 31.10 g and five troy ounces about 155.52 g. Weigh pieces individually rather than weighing a full tube, because the tube itself adds weight and hides a light round inside an otherwise sensible total.
Manufacturing tolerances mean small variation is normal. A piece out by a full gram or more, in either direction, is worth asking the seller about.
Then check the density
Density is where plated pieces usually give themselves away, because a copper skin does nothing to change what the core weighs.
Published reference figures put the density of copper at roughly 8.96 grams per cubic centimetre. The same sources put zinc near 7.14, aluminium near 2.70, mild steel near 7.85 and lead near 11.34. Any of those cores will shift the result well away from copper.
The ruler method, for bars
Measure length, width and height in centimetres, multiply them together for the volume in cubic centimetres, then divide the weight in grams by that volume. A rectangular bar with clean edges gives a reasonably close figure.
The water method, for rounds
Part fill a measuring cylinder or jug with water and note the level. Lower the piece in, note the new level, and the difference in millilitres is the volume in cubic centimetres. Tap the side to release air bubbles first, since a trapped bubble inflates the volume and drags your calculated density down.
Be honest about the limits of a kitchen measurement. Rounded edges and surface tension introduce error, so treat a result somewhere in the region of 8.5 to 9.3 as consistent with copper rather than expecting an exact match. Brass and bronze sit close enough to copper that home testing will not reliably separate them, and no home method establishes a purity figure. Zinc, aluminium and steel cores it will separate easily.
The magnet test, done properly
Copper is not ferromagnetic, so a magnet will not stick to it. If a magnet clings to your piece, there is iron or steel involved and it is not solid copper.
A magnet failing to stick proves less than people think, because zinc and aluminium are not ferromagnetic either. The more informative version uses eddy currents. Tilt the piece, place a strong neodymium magnet on the surface and let it slide. On solid copper, which is a very good electrical conductor, the magnet visibly drags and creeps rather than sliding freely. Drop the same magnet down a copper pipe and it falls in slow motion.
The effect is qualitative, so it works best as a comparison. Keeping one piece you are confident about, such as a plain 1 troy ounce copper bar at NZ$9.00, gives you something to test a new arrival against.
Look at the edges, rims and high points
Plating fails first where it is thinnest and where hands touch it most. Inspect in daylight, not under warm indoor lighting, which flatters everything to a copper tone.
- Rims, corners and the edge of the design, where a silver-grey or yellow metal can show through.
- Raised lettering and high relief detail, which wear before the flat fields do.
- Any blistering, flaking or a fine seam line running around the edge.
- A colour that looks sprayed on, unusually uniform, or slightly too pink against a piece you already trust.
Ageing also gives you a signal. Solid copper tones gradually and fairly evenly as it reacts with the air. Plated pieces tend to wear through in patches, and what shows under a worn patch is a different metal rather than darker copper.
What the stamp does and does not tell you
Copper bullion of this type is marked ".999 fine", which is three nines, or 99.9 percent copper. A stamp is a statement by whoever struck the piece. Bullion is struck by mints and private manufacturers, and dies can be copied, so the mark is a claim rather than an independent certificate.
Treat it as one input among several. If the stamp, the listing and the scale all agree, that is a consistent picture. If the listing claims one purity and the piece is marked another, ask before you pay.
Price is a weak test for copper
With gold and silver, a price well under the metal value is a warning sign. Copper does not work that way, because the metal is a smaller part of the total cost. An unusually cheap copper piece is more often a small or thin piece than a fake one, so check the stated weight before you read anything into the price.
The comparison that does work is dollars per troy ounce. A per ounce figure lets you compare different sizes on the same basis. Buy in a way that makes the question easier
Most authenticity worries start at the point of purchase, so it helps to buy where the details are written down. Look for purity and weight stated on the listing itself, a seller with a real address and phone number, and published shipping and returns policies you can read before ordering. If you think a piece is plated
Do not file it, cut it or put acid on it. Those tests are destructive, they damage a piece that may turn out to be perfectly good, and they complicate any return you might want to make.
Instead, weigh it, measure it, photograph the suspect area in daylight next to a known piece, and write down the figures. Then contact the seller with that evidence and check their returns policy for the timeframe you have.
